Yamaha DX7 Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Yamaha DX7 is a synthesizer created by the Yamaha Corporation, based on FM synthesis. It's the world's first commercially successful digital synthesizer. A midi-based tone module called TX7 was also released comprising of the sound generation circuitry of the DX7 without the keyboard. The Yamaha DX7 lacked a built-in sequencer and thus could not be used as a complete music production system, although its users loved it just the same for its beautiful sounds. In fact, the concept of a synthesizer as a complete music production environment was not even born until the arrival of the Korg M1 music workstation synthesizer a few years later, which did have a built-in sequencer alongwith a powerful sound engine. The M1 swiftly displaced the DX7 as not only the best selling synthesizer of the time but also became the best selling synthesizer of all time.
However, classic DX7 sounds like "Moog" are still loved by musicians all over the world. And after over twenty years of its initial release, people are still buying the DX7 from places like pawn shops, newspaper ads and the Recycler magazine among others.
One could find many DX7's listed for auction on eBay, where it was heavily traded. This was largely because people still loved the DX7 sounds and some paid close to $500 for an old synthesizer. Most of the functionality of the DX7 can be reproduced today in a software synthesizers such as the FM7 by Native Instruments which can import sounds from the DX7 and be used in stand-alone mode, or as a plug-in in direct-to-disk recording software such as emagic Logic Audio. Some have claimed that the used DX7 market has been drying up rapidly in response to such software emulators.
