Before the reorganisation of local government in Greater London in the 1960s, it was an independent borough. Before urbanisation (principally in the latter half of the 19th century), It was originally part of Tottenham , covered by Woodland called Tottenham Wood; hence the name of the area, Tottenham Wood Green.
