The regiment has its origins in the fänikor raised in the 1550s and 1560s. In 1615, these smaller units where organized into the Norrland Grand Regiment (Landsregementet i Norrland), and in 1624, this grand regiment was spilt into three regiments, one of those being Västerbottens regemente. The regiment's soldiers where conscripted mainly from the provinces of Westrobothnia, Angermannia and Medelpadia. It was one of the original 20 Swedish infantry regiments mentioned in the Swedish constitution of 1634.
The regiment was officially raised in 1624. Various companies and battalions of the regiment where used in the Polish War and the Thirty Years' War in different periods between 1625 and 1648. The regiment surrendered to the Russians after the Battle of Poltava and was re-raised in Sweden. The regiment's both battalions surrendered to the Russians after the Finnish War, but were allowed to return home later.
The regiment changed name to Västerbottens fältjägarregemente\, Westrobothnia Field Ranger Regiment, in 1829 and was split in 1841 into Västerbottens fältjägarkår (Westrobothnia Field Ranger Corps, corps in older Swedish terminology is similar to a battalion) and Norrbottens fältjägarkår.
The unit was given the designation I 19, (19th Infantry Regiment) after a general order in 1816. When the regiment was split, its designation was changed to I XIX, and later to I 20. The regiment was renamed in 1892 back to Västerbottens regemente, and was disbanded July 1st 2000.
