Irian Jaya Barat or West Irian Jaya is a new province of Indonesia which split off from Papua province. It covers Bird's Head area (Vogelkop or Kepala Burung) and surrounding islands. The new province has its own temporary governmental structure; the capital is still disputed between Sorong and Manokwari.Irian Jaya Barat consists of 1 municipality (Sorong) and 8 regencies:
- Sorong (capital Sorong)
- Manokwari (capital Manokwari)
- Fak-Fak (capital Fak-Fak)
- Sorong Selatan (capital Teminabuan)
- Raja Ampat (capital Waisai)
- Kaimana (capital Kaimana)
- Teluk Bintuni (capital Bintuni)
- Teluk Wondama (capital Rasiei)
