Waikato Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Waikato Region is a local government region on the western side of the North Island of New Zealand. It stretches from Lake Taupo and north King Country in the south, up through true Waikato to the Coromandel Peninsula and the boundary with the Auckland Region. The region has a wet temperate climate. The city of Hamilton is its major population centre and home to Waikato University.The land is mostly rural farm land, much of which is dedicated to dairy farming, although the area around Cambridge has many thoroughbred stables.
The name is taken from the Waikato River. The word comes from the Maori words wai meaning water and kato meaning to flow. So roughly Waikato translates to 'flowing water'.
