Waikanae (spoken Why-Can-I) is a small town on New Zealand's Kapiti Coast, about 60 kilometers north of Wellington the capital city. It is about 8 kilometers north of Paraparaumu, and about 40 kilometers south of Levin."Waikanae" is a Maori word meaning "The glistening of the mullet".
The town and surrounding area is most noted for its beautiful beach and river mouth. The town serves as a quiet place for young families and older people.
The area has much historic and mythic meaning for the Maori people of New Zealand.
