Växjö [˘vɛkʃøː] is a city and municipality in Kronoberg County, in southern Sweden. The municipality covers an area of 1674.3 km². Of the total population of 75 036, 37 287 are male, and 37 749 are female (2002). The population density of the community is 44 inhabitants per km².

History

Växjö received its city charter in 1492, but it had been an important market and commercial centre already at the pass of the first millennium. In the 12th century, building of the Växjö Cathedral began and due to this it grew to become an important religious centre. This also led to the creation of other istitutions such as The Old Lyceum in Växjö, one of Sweden's oldest educational institutions. The school had amongst others Carolus Linnaeus, the father of taxonomy, as one of its students.

Today, Växjö is the administrative, cultural and industrial centre of Kronoberg County and central Smalandia. It is home to Växjö University and industries such as Alstom and Aerotech Telub.
