University of Zimbabwe Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) was formerly a college of the University of London, which opened its doors to its first students in 1952. It is located in Harare's surbub of Mount Pleasant.The idea of a University in (then Rhodesia) was first raised in 1945. The next year the Legislative Assembly of Southern Rhodesia called for the establishment of a university college to serve the needs of the Rhodesians and neighbouring territories. In 1947 the Governor of Southern Rhodesia establishes the Rhodesia University Foundation Fund and in 1948 the City of Salisbury in Harare gave land for the construction of the first campus. In 1953 Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother laid the foundation stone on the Mount Pleasant site. In 1970 the University began a phased removal of the special relationships between the Universities of London and Birmingham.
