United States Foreign Service Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description

The United States Foreign Service is part of the United States Department of State. Foreign Service Officers advocate American foreign policy, protect American citizens, and promote American business interests throughout the world. They staff embassies, consulates and other diplomatic missions. There are 20,588 persons employed in the Foreign Service.

Foreign Service officers represent America; analyze and report on political, economic, and social trends in the host country; and respond to the needs of American citizens abroad. They serve in Washington, D.C and at nearly 265 U.S. diplomatic posts around the world. They are part of the frontline personnel of all U.S. embassies, consulates and other diplomatic missions.

The Foreign Service is distinct from the Civil Service; the State Department employs members of both.
