Trax Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description

Trax, or #trax is the name of an IRC channel and community of musicians and enthusiasts who enjoy the art of MOD tracking.

Over the years, the #trax IRC channel has divided, migrated and multiplied. Here is a general timeline breaking down the events:

Timeline

• 1994, March: A large number of musical trackers move out of the EFnet IRC chat channel #coders in order to form #trax on EFnet, where they remain until September 1995.

• 1995, September: Due to excessive problems with EFnet such as netsplits and channel takeovers by script kiddies, #trax moves to a more secure IRC server, AnotherNet (NEATO.ORG). It remains there until October 1996.

• 1996, May: Europe and the USA divide EFnet into two seperate chat networks; EFnet (USA) and for lack of a better name, "EUnet" (Europe). EUnet eventually becomes officially known as IRCnet.

• 1996, October: #trax (USA) moves to irc.scene.org. This is actually a misnomer as a great deal of the people who migrated to scene.org were European, but it just happened to be that this is also where mostly all of the North American trackers moved to.

• 1996 (???): #trax (Europe) moves to IRCnet. EFnet proper becomes #trax-less.

• 1999, December: Members of IRCnet hold a vote on whether or not to merge IRCnet and irc.scene.org chat networks together. The majority of the members do not agree to move and the measure fails to pass.

• 1997: EFnet proper recreates #trax.

Present Day

At present, there are 3 major #trax channels on separate IRC networks.

• EFnet - A completely new group of trackers not directly related to the original EFnet #trax community from 1994.

(Channel average: ~ 45 users)

• irc.scene.org: Referred to as the "USA #trax", this is where most veteran North American trackers lurk. But that's not to say that the majority of the channel's population originates from the United States. In fact many are from Australia and Europe.

(Channel average: ~ 38 users)

• IRCnet: Largely the European segment of trackers from the original 1994 #trax. Due to the relatively few IRCnet servers accessible to North America, most of the people in this particular #trax channel are European. The most reliable USA server for IRCnet is irc2.us.ircnet.net.
