Details, Explanation and Meaning About TOPGUN

TOPGUN Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description

TOPGUN is the code name and common name of the U.S. Navy Strike Fighter Tactical Instructor (SFTI) course. Until 1993, SFTI was called the Navy Fighter Weapons School. The steady decrease over the course of the 1990s of the number of pure fighter aircraft (F-4 Phantom II and F-14 Tomcat jet fighters to F/A-18 Hornet, Super Hornet and future F-35 Joint Strike Fighters) necessitated a change of the focus of TOPGUN from solely air combat maneuvering to a broader course of study.

In 1996, with the closure of NAS Miramar, TOPGUN was moved to NAS Fallon, Nevada. It was not returned to Miramar when MCAS Miramar reopened in the late 1990s.

In 1985, a movie was made about TOPGUN, featuring Tom Cruise as a young hotshot pilot.
