The Tube is a less formal name for the London Underground (LU), London's metro system. The underground railway has been described as the tube since 1890 when the first electric railway line running through deep-level tunnels was opened. Although the term is not the official name of the system, it is very widely used. For instance London Underground itself uses the term in marketing and customer information literature and the LU website is situated at http://www.thetube.com. The term has no legal standing.

Specific lines also have their own nicknames; the most widely used is the Waterloo & City Line;'s "The Drain".
