The Snares is a small uninhabited island group to the south of - and territorially part of - New Zealand. They lie 100 kilometres to the southwest of Stewart Island. The island group was first charted by Captain George Vancouver in 1791, although prior to this time the islands were known to the Maori, who called one of the larger islands Te taniwha ("The sea-monster").
The group consists of one main island (Northeast Island, area 200 hectares), and numerous small rocky islets. Much of the main island is forested. A dangerous reef (Seal Reef) lies ten kilometres to the south of the group.
