Hospital

Founded in 1828, the hospital provided free care to those who could not afford treatment. During the cholera epidemic of 1837 the hospital continued to accept patients when many other hospitals had closed their doors, and this led to Queen Victoria bestowing the title 'Royal' on the hospital in 1837.

For a long time theRoyal Free was the only hospital in London to allow women to receive clinical instruction in medicine.Due to this the hospital formed a close association with the London School of Medicine for Women, which would belater renamed the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine.

The Royal Free moved to its present site in the mid 1970s, bringing together the old Royal Free Hospital in Gray's Inn Road with the Lawn Road, New End and Hampstead General hospitals.

In April 1991 the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust became one of the first trusts established under the provisions of the NHS and Community Care Act 1990.

In 1998 the Royal Free Hospital School Of Medicine merged with UCL to form the Royal Free and University College Medical School.
