One of the earlier works by J. G. Ballard, The Crystal World (ISBN 0374520968) tells the story of a physician trying to make his way deep into the jungle to a secluded leprosy treatment facility. Yet while trying to make it to his destination, his chaotic path also leads him to try and come to terms with an apocalyptic virus in the jungle that crystalizes everything it touches.
