Shotokan Kata: Tekki Shodan (Iron Horseman)

The three Tekki katas are much older than the Heian katas and have their roots in the Tiger style. They were Sensei Funakoshi's favourites. They are representative of old Karate, based entirely on lateral movements, but executed neatly. These katas are unique in that they are based on kiba-dachi (horseman stance) and have a very dynamic rhythm. The idea is one of being attacked from the side and front while backed up against a wall. Turns of the head, gaze and the spirit of zanshin are very important. Like the Heian katas, the Tekki katas were created for training purposes. Tekki Shodan is the first of the series of three katas.
