Sylvester (b. Sylvester James, September 1944 in Los Angeles, California – d. December 16, 1988 in San Francisco, California) was a gay black disco and soul musician and drag performer. His grandmother was Julia Morgan. He died of complications from AIDS.Living in San Francisco in the 1960s, he was a Women of the Blues before becoming head of the Cockettes. He left the Cockettes in 1973 and joined the Hot Band.
Openly gay and often singing in falsetto, despite a rich baritone voice, his most famous song was "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)", and he is considered one of the first Hi-NRG artists. His backup singers included future Two Tons of Fun and Weather Girls duo Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes. Other hits include "Do You Wanna Funk" and "Dance (Disco Heat)".
