Super Mario Sunshine is the latest console title in the Mario series. It was released in the U.S. in August 2002, nine months after the release of the GameCube. It is the first game on the Nintendo GameCube to exclusively feature Mario, though he appeared in Luigi's Mansion and Super Smash Bros. Melee.Super Mario Sunshine is one of the first GameCube games to become a Player's Choice title.

Story

When Mario sets out for the prestigous tropical retreat Isle Delfino, he expects a well-deserved first class vacation. However, upon arrival, Mario finds that the once-pristine island has been extensively vandalized with paint. Even worse, the culprit is disguised as Mario, leading to the real Mario's arrest almost immediately after embarking from his chartered aircraft. Mario is found guilty after a brief and biased trial and is sentenced to collect the Shine Sprites -- ancient tokens of extreme importance to the islanders (they're responsible for Delfino's sunshine and tropical enviroment; tourism is dead without them) that left after Isle Delfino became polluted. To help out, Mario is given FLUDD; a powerful water cannon toted like a backpack. Mario sets out on his adventure vowing to clear his name and locate the real criminal while restoring tranquility and order to Isle Delfino.

The game includes a number of levels, with Delfino Plaza acting as the overworld. A Mario look-alike referred to as "Shadow Mario" seems to be behind the trouble on the island, and it is later revealed that Shadow Mario is in fact Bowser Junior, son of Bowser.

Super Mario Sunshine is the first game where Mario uses an accessory for almost the complete duration. FLUDD features spray and hover capabilities when it's first acquired; other nozzles can be unlocked and extend FLUDD's functionality.

Yoshi is also playable in Super Mario Sunshine. Yoshi can be used to eat the butterflies around the levels to get yellow or blue coins. Mario can also use him to get rid of the yellow slime that is scattered around in Delfino Plaza.

The music was produced by Koji Kondo.
