Star, written as *, is the value given to the combinatorial game {0 | 0}, where zero is the zero game.Star is a value, not a number in the traditional sense, which is neither positive or negative, but also not zero. This is because a game with value 0 must be a second-player win, and a game with signed value (positive or negative) must favor either the player with that sign (regardless of whether or not she played first). Star is one value for a first-player win game.
Star has the property that * + * = 0, because the sum of two such games is equivalent to the zero game.
Star, neither positive, negative, nor zero, is called fuzzy and said to be confused with (as opposed to less than, equal to, or greater than) zero.
The simplest example of a star game is Nim with one piece. The first player will remove it, and the second player will lose.
