Spearmint (Mentha spicata, M. cardiaca, M. viridis) is the mint variety most commonly used in cooking, and yields an aromatic and carminative oil, oil of spearmint. It is named for its crinkled, spear-shaped leaves. It is found in watery places.
It has oblong, lanceolate, sub-acute, serrate leaves, and slender spikes of flowers.
