Details, Explanation and Meaning About SmartMedia

SmartMedia Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description

SmartMedia is a trademark of Toshiba Corp. for two formats of flash memory. The two formats are called 5V and 3.3V (sometimes marked 3V) after their main supply voltages. The packaging is nearly identical, except for the reversed side of the mechanical orientation notched corner. Toshiba began manufacturing the card in Summer 1995 in competition with Intel's Miniature Card alliance and SanDisk's Compact Flash standard. Toshiba licensed the standard and Samsung became the second manufacturer in early 1996. The SmartMedia standard contains only a flash die, no controller or software, thus reducing the price.

SmartMedia cards provide mobile data storage in a small interchangeable format. Originally named Solid State Floppy Disk Card (SSFDC), a SmartMedia card consists of a single NAND flash EEPROM chip embedded in a thin plastic card. It can be used for storage in many digital systems including PDAss, games, digital cameras, pagers and MP3 digital music players. SmartMedia cards larger than 128MB are rare. The format has been largely superseded by newer form factors. Nevertheless, major manufacturers continue to produce SmartMedia cards at ever-lower prices as of 2004 due to the large number of users.
