Skype Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Skype is a peer-to-peer internet telephony network, founded by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, the creators of KaZaA. Unlike KaZaA, Skype is said to be free of adware and spyware. Skype is proprietary software, but is provided as a free download from the official site. Skype users can speak to other skype users for free. The software also includes a SkypeOut feature which allows a Skype user to speak with a regular telephone subscriber, for a fee (0.017 euros or 0.02 USD per minute to most countries).Versions exist for Microsoft Windows (Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows CE (Pocket PC 2003)), Mac OS X and GNU/Linux.
Unlike some other VoIP programs, Skype intelligently routes calls between users; it is designed to "just work." It will even try to find a way through most firewalls, unlike alternatives such as SIP (see article).
The first beta version of the skype software was released on August 29 2003 and version 1.0 for Windows was released on July 27 2004. October 20 2004 was the first time that 1 million Skype users were online at once.
Some have questioned the rapid growth of Skype users when there are other solutions that provide the same featuers. This could be attributed to Metcalfe's law of communications systems which states that the value of the system is proportional to the number of users
