Shiraz (شیراز in Persian) is a city in southwest Iran, the capital of Fars Province. It was the capital of Persia from 1750 to 1779, until Tehran became the capital.
The surroundings of Shiraz are the origin of the ancient Persia since 700 BC or even earlier. The city began to grow in the 7th century when the power of the former regional capital Istakhr was broken by the Arabs. Now Shiraz is one of greatest towns of Iran.
There are two universities (general and medical) in Shiraz. It is famous for its carpet production.
The ruins of Persepolis are found 60 km in northeastern direction - as a witness to the ancient glory of the Achaemenid empire 2,500 years ago.
