The shichi fukujin, 七福神, are the seven gods of good fortune in Japanese folklore: ; . They are often the subject of netsuke carvings and other representations. Each has a traditional attribute:

  • Ebisu - the god of fisherman, often depicted carrying a cod or sea bass
  • Daikoku - the god of commerce and trade. Ebisu and Daikoku are often paired and represented as carvings or masks on the walls of small retail shops.
  • Hotei - the fat and happy god of good health
  • Benten-sama (弁天)- the goddess of knowledge, art and beauty
  • Jurojin - the god of longevity
  • Fukurokuju-the god of wisdom
  • Bishamonten - the god of war
