Rosario is a city in Argentina. Is the most populous city in Santa Fe Province, and the second most populous in the country, with approximately 1 million inhabitants. Rosario is located 300km northeast of Buenos Aires on the Paraná River, the longest river in Argentina.In colonial times, it was known as Villa del Rosario. Along with Paraná, it is one of the few Argentine cities that cannot point to a particular known individual as its founder. The city's patron saint is the Virgen del Rosario (feast day: October 7).
The Flag Memorial in Rosario marks the site where, on February 27, 1812, on the shore of the Paraná River, General Manuel Belgrano first raised the Argentinian flag. Because of this, Rosario is known as the "Cradle of the Argentine Flag".
It is seat of the Universidad Nacional de Rosario (founded 1968) and the football (soccer) teams Rosario Central (founded 1889) and Newell's Old Boys (founded 1903). The city had three notable newspapers: La Capital (Argentina's oldest newspaper, founded 1867), El Ciudadano & la Región (founded 1999) and Rosario/12 (founded 1991).
On November 17 – November 20, 2004, the International Congress of the Spanish Language will be held in Rosario.
Rosario has a high proportion of extreme poverty, mostly in slums lacking toilets or potable water.
