Ron Mercer (born when, where?), as of 2004 a guard for the New Jersey Nets, first was a star basketball player at the University of Kentucky. He had a very prosperous career (a freshmen year championship) which ended witha an opportunity to win a second NCAA championship in his final year of attendance. Then Kentucky coach Rick Patino was reunited with him when he was selected by the Boston Celtics in the first round (6th pick overall) of the 1997 NBA Draft. Patino himself was beginning his frist year as coach in the NBA. Mercer was traded by the Celtics along with 2 role players to the Denver Nuggets for Danny Fortson, Eric Williams, Eric Washington and a future draft choice. He left after that season, the next year signing as a free agent with the Chicago Bulls. Although spending two solid season there in which he averaged 17 points, he was traded by the Bulls with Brad Miller, Ron Artest and Kevin Ollie to the Indiana Pacers for Jalen Rose,Travis Best, Norman Richardson, and a second-round draft pick on. In Indiana he served as a role player off of the bench but his spirits were down along with his play, and he was then traded to the San Antonio Spurs in a three-team trade. After playing one year with the Spurs, he was released. He has now found a home in New Jersey which he hopes will be his last stop.
