Roller skating is travelling on smooth terrain with roller skates. The two popular forms of Roller Skating are inline skating and quad skating. Inline skates and skeelers are special boots with four, respectively five small wheels in a row after each other. Quad skating consists of roller skates that have two axles with two wheels each, per skate. Older versions of these are bootless, meant to be attached to regular footwear.

Thus it is similar to ice skating, with the metal blades replaced by wheels. It is often done for recreation and as a sport, but, more often than ice skating, it can be done functionally for moving around (it is faster than walking).

It is done on the same places as skateboarding: on the road, sidewalk (not always allowed) or various street furnishings like fences and steps, and on special tracks and areas, including skate parks and half-pipes.

Competitive roller skating is composed of speed skaters and artistic skaters who compete in figures, team and solo dance, and free dance events. Skaters wear highly decorated costumes. There are competitions held throughout the world.

In the United States, the controlling organization is USARS, headquartered in Lincoln, NE, also home of the National Roller Skating Museum. Nationals are held each summer with skaters required to qualify through regional competitions.
