Robert Edmund Grant was a professor at Edinburgh University. He was a Lamarkian Evolutionist and a friend of Charles Darwin. Darwin and Grant met while Darwin was studying medicine. Grant, a specialist in marine biology and invertebrate zoology, and Darwin collected specimens together.
Grant's biological theory treated life as a chance occurrence that formed simple cells, which evolved to more complex organisms and man.
