Robert Jones Portman (born December 19, 1955), of Terrace Park, Ohio, is a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio, representing that state's second congressional district, based in Cincinnati.Portman, a Methodist, was born in Cincinnati and graduated from Cincinnati Country Day School. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Dartmouth College (Hanover, N.H.) in 1979 and received a law degree from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Mich.) in 1984.
He served as associate counsel to President George H. W. Bush in 1989 and the moved into the position of director of Bush's Office of Legislative Affairs, where he served until 1991.
Portman was first elected to the House in a special election in 1993 (103rd Congress) to fill a vacancy that resulted from the resignation of U.S. Rep. Willis D. Gradison Jr.
Portman is a member of the budget, and ways and means committees.
Portman's wife's name is Jane.
