The Renault 4 known at the beginning as the 4L, was the first Renault featuring front wheel drive. It was designed to challenge the Citroën 2CV and replace the Renault 4CV. Early version used engines and gearbox from the Renault 4CV.While never as beloved as the Citroën 2CV in France, it is the most successful French car of all time, with 8 million units being produced between 1961 and 1992.
