Reciprocity (Canadian politics) Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
In 19th century Canadian politics, reciprocity was the term used to describe the concept of free trade with the United States of America and was promoted as an alternative to Sir John A. Macdonald's National Policy. The Liberal Party of Canada ran and were defeated over their reciprocity platform in the 1891 Canadian election. Subsequently, the Liberals shelved the concept and went on to win the 1896 Canadian election. The concept of reciprocity with the United States was revived in the 1985 when the Royal Commission on the Economic Union and Development Prospects for Canada headed by former Liberal Minister of Finance Donald S. Macdonald issued a report calling for free trade with the US. The Progressive Conservative government of Brian Mulroney acted on the recommendation by negotiating the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement and fighting the 1988 Canadian election on the issue.
Reciprocity was made to help the farmers on the prairies so that they did not have to transport they're goods over long distances and could trade directly south.

I'm Canadian kid i have no clue about american geography so lets assume that Canada is North of America for all you Americans. Thats when you turn towards sunrise and turn left 90'. lets assume you know what that means.
Anyways, so the Americans think that "hey! this is great, they think that we're helping them but then we can annex Canada by making its economy dependant!" (we'll guess wat suckers? we beat you in the war of 1812, we'll beat you again!). For Example, American Congress memeber, Champ Clark, supported Reciprocity because he hoped "to see the day when the american flag would fly over every square foot of the British North American possesions clear to the North Pole."So most Canadians are like "OMFG!!! THEM NOOBS R TRYING TO PWNZOR US!!!" and so they decide not to support Laurier, who made the Act.
Anyways, Back to useful stuff
The debate of the Reciprosity agreement was fierce. the Opposition and the supporters both cam up with excellent points. Many Canadian Governments were eager for reciprocity and it came right into Lauriers lap (laurier was a liberal). Would sum1 else plz finish this?? i have to do my history work...
