Raion Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description

A raion, or rayon (район in Russian and Ukrainian), is a subnational entity of Belarus, Moldova, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, or the former Soviet Union.

A raion is a subordinate part of:

• in Belarus - a voblast;
• in Russia - an oblast’, krai, autonomous republic/district and big city ;
• in Soviet Union (extinct) - of a small Soviet republic (SSR), oblast’, krai, republic and big city of large SSR republic;
• in Ukraine - an oblast', Crimean autonomy and big city,

i.e. an entity two steps below the national level.

Raion can be best translated as "district".
