Puy-de-Dôme is a French département in the Auvergne region, named after the famous mountain, the Puy-de-Dôme.
Along with several other départements, it was created on 4 March 1790 - at the height of the French Revolution - out of the old province of Auvergne. Originally, the département was to be called Mont d'Or ("golden mountain"), but the deputy of Clermont-Ferrand commented that this would draw undue attention to the fiscal control of the local government over the rest of the "citizens" - highly undesirable in the political climate of the time - and so the name Puy-de-Dôme was chosen instead.
