Putrefaction is the decomposition of
proteins, especially by
anaerobic microorganisms. The result is usually
amines such as
putrescine and
cadaverine, which have a putrid odor.

Putrefaction is a necessary part of human digestion, since proteins cannot be absorbed directly by the body. The
intestines break down proteins such as
casein into
amino acids which are vital for nutrition.
