Benedict V (died July 4, 965), Pope (May 964 - July 4, 965), was elected by the Romans on the death of John XII. The Roman emperor Otto I did not approve of the choice, and carried off the pope to Hamburg, where he died.

Described by contemporaries as a religious man, both before his election and during the period after his deposition in June 964.

At the synod which deposed him the pastoral staff was broken over him by Leo VIII, the first mention of the papal sceptre. After his deposition and removal to Hamburg he became a deacon, dying in July 865.
