Platteville is a city located in Grant County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,989. The city is located within the Town of Platteville, though it is politically independent.The city is home to the University of Wisconsin - Plateville. The school is known for both its agricultural and engineering departments. For a number of years, the Chicago Bears football team held spring training camps in Platteville. However this is no longer the case with the Bears deciding to hold training camp in Illinois.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.9 km² (4.2 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.
Platteville is services by Wisconsin State Highways 80 & 81, as well as U.S Highway 151]]. Originally, U.S. 151 went through town, but with the completion of the four lane highway, traffic has been routed on to the new highway, and as a result the highway now loops around the city.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 9,989 people, 3,312 households, and 1,692 families residing in the city. The population density is 918.3/km² (2,376.4/mi²). There are 3,482 housing units at an average density of 320.1 persons/km² (828.4 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.15% White, 1.12% African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.40% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,312 households out of which 22.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 48.9% are non-families. 32.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.86.
In the city the population is spread out with 14.4% under the age of 18, 41.3% from 18 to 24, 17.5% from 25 to 44, 14.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 119.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 120.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $35,742, and the median income for a family is $50,583. Males have a median income of $31,424 versus $21,896 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,858. 19.4% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.2% are under the age of 18 and 8.3% are 65 or older.
