Palmerston North is a city in the Manawatu-Wanganui region of the North Island of New Zealand, about 140 kilometres north of the capital, Wellington.

It has transportation significance as a rail junction, where the North Island Main Trunk is joined by the line that runs through the Manawatu Gorge to Woodville, then branches to serve most of Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay. The railway was originally routed through the central Square of the town, but was diverted to the north in the middle of the 20th Century; urban development leap frogged it, however.

Massey University is based in Palmerston North.

Note: Palmerston North - often called simply "Palmy" by locals, should not be confused with the much smaller town of Palmerston in the South Island.
