Although, the term opiate is often incorrectly used to refer to all opium-like drugs, it is more properly limited to the natural opium alkaloids and the semi-synthetics drugs derived from them.Natural opium also contains small amounts of papaverines, which technically classifies them as opiates; however they have essentially no effects on the central nervous system, so they are not opioids.
