Olecko is a town in Masuria (Mazury) province of Poland.
Olecko, (Oletzko) and Margrabowa (Marggrabova) used to be neighbour towns in
in East Prussia. They were joined together under the name of Margrabowa, but in 1928 renamed in Treuburg, and became the capital of Oletzko County.
Marggrabova was an example of a town in the eastern Marches of the German Empire, and it was named after the title of the margrave Albrecht of Brandenburg-Ansbach.
Olecko district refers to the historical East Prussian district of Oletzko with its administrative district town at Oletzko. The district was later renamed Treuburg.
The area was populated by Masurians, an ethnic Polish group. In the process of germanisation, the number of Polish-speaking people decreased.
In 1888, Polish language was completely forbidden in the schools of all levels.
