Nokia Corporation is the world's largest telecommunications manufacturer. It is a Finnish telecommunications company best known for its leading range of mobile phones. Nokia also produces mobile phone infrastructure and other telecommunications equipment for applications such as traditional voice telephony, ISDN, broadband access, professional mobile radio, voice over IP, and wireless LAN. Nokia is also known to produce a line of satellite receivers. Although Nokia mainly makes GSM phones, they have recently begun manufacturing phones for the CDMA market as well. Nokia has recently stepped into the mobile gaming device sector with their N-Gage console.

History

Founded in 1865 in Finland, Nokia began its life as a paper manufacturer. By the 1900's they expanded business to include the manufacture of Rubber goods, in particular rubber boots.

In 1912 the company also expanded into cable production for communication lines. This eventually became their most dominant operation which led them into focusing on telecommunications.

By 1967, Nokia Corporation merged all their departments under the Nokia name and focused on the production of telecommunications.

In 1986, it has lanched a venture in broadcasting with the TV channel Kolmoskanava, together with YLE & Mainos-TV (MTV), part of Alma Media. Nokia left this in 1993, after Mainos-TV bought the remains shares in Kolmoskanava venture.

In 2004, to celebrate Singapore 39th National Day, it launch mobile handphone torchlight in the National Day Parade in Singapore.
