The genre commonly known as noise rock developed in the 1980s as an exprimental outgrowth of punk rock. Sonic Youth propelled the no wave aesthetic into the new direction of noise rock. Some notable artists working in the noise rock style are Swans, Big Black, Melt-Banana, and the Boredoms.
