In 1999, David Howard, an aide to Washington D.C. mayor Anthony Williams, resigned after using the word niggardly in conversation and having it misconstrued as a racial epithet. He was later offered his job back after the story received national media attention.
The words niggardly and niggard come from the Old Norse verb nigla meaning "to fuss about small matters" and have no etymological relationship to the racial epithet nigger.
