Newbridge Networks was a company founded by Canadian/Welsh entrepreneur Terry Matthews. It was founded in the mid-80s to create voice networking products after Matthews was forced out of his original company Mitel. It quicky became a market leader in this area using the voice switching expertise that was prevalent in the Ottawa area.Newbridge later absorbed some routing technology that had been abandoned by Gandalf and entered the pure data networking market with a distributed routing product. It later became well-known for a family of ATM products.
It was purchased and absorbed by Alcatel in the late 90s for seven billion dollars in stock. With this transaction, Matthews became the single largest shareholder in Alcatel.
