National Parliamentary Debate Association (NPDA) Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description

The National Parliamentary Debate Association (NPDA) is one of two United States national organizations which organizes intercollegiate parliamentary debate competition. The other is the American Parliamentary Debating Association (APDA). The NPDA is a relatively young organization, but has already become one of the largest debate organizations in the United States.

There are usually several invitational tournaments throughout the country to choose from on almost every weekend of the academic year, the largest of which is held in February at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California.

The NPDA National tournament in March typically draws over seven hundred people for a competition that crowns a national champion. The 2004 tournament was the largest debate tournament in collegiate United States history with over 300 teams in the field. This gathering also features an exhibition debate between a team of Irish debaters and a team of debaters selected by the NPDA.

A second, younger championship tournament also exists within the NPDA circuit in the form of the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence. Two-person teams compete for bids by acquiring points throughout the season of varsity competition. Controversy exists as to whether the two tournaments are in conflict.

Increasingly prominent within the world of NPDA debate is the online forum Net-Benefits.net which serves as an electronic hub for discourse and information on parliamentary debate.
