An aging baseball star Jack Elliot (Tom Selleck) is not hitting them like he used to and finds himself traded from the U.S. major leaguess to the Nagoya Chunichi Dragons in Japan. His new coach (Ken Takakura) pushes him to be the best he can be but despite everybody's help he finds it difficult to adjust to Japanese life. His new love interest Hiroko (the coach's daughter) helps him develop a respect for hard work and sportsmanship and he is able to turn his life around. His new outlook on life is infectious and even coach and his teammates find something in them they didn't know they had.
