A monolithic church is a church made from a single block of stone. They are usually hewn from the ground or from the side of a hill or mountain.Examples include the Church of St. George in Lalibela, Ethiopia, believed to have been constructed by the Knights Templar in the thirteenth century, and the Church of the Rock in Idar-Oberstein, Germany.
