Monachus is a genus (and a subgenus of the same name) of the Family Phocidae and the Order Pinnipedia and refers to the various monk seal species throughout the world. These include the Hawaiian monk seal or Monachus schauinslandi and the Mediterranean monk seal or Monachus monachus. The Caribbean monk seal or Monachus tropicalis is extinct.
