Much of Bakhtin's work was on the novel. For many years he had problems publishing, in the circumstances of the USSR of his day. His work became known only gradually outside of Russia.
As a literary theorist, he emerges out of the school of Russian Structuralism, but he attempts to understand the method of literary meaning in dialogue as a series of structures inherent in the text and culture surrounding the text.
