Mihail Kogălniceanu (

Paris) was a
Romanian statesman, historian and publicist, he became the first
Prime minister of Romania October 11,
1863, after the union of
Moldavian and Wallachian principalities.
He successfully proposed legislation to secularize the property of monasteries (adopted December 25, 1863). However, his efforts at agrarian reform resulted in a censure vote, and he resigned in 1865.
