Mercedes-Benz 220SE Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
The Mercedes-Benz 220SE (chassis W128) was an automobile that was available in sedan, coupé, or cabriolet body styles. This particular model is the last of the "Ponton" series which had design roots and styling cues beginning in 1953 with the Mercedes-Benz 180 sedan (chassis W120). The attractive Cabriolet was expensive at roughly the same price as Cadillac's top line Eldorado Biarritz of this era. This MB was somewhat less ostentatious but compensated with exclusivity, fine materials, quality fit and finish. The engineering design was well ahead of its time with unitized body/frame construction and all independent suspension. The 2.2 liter inline 6 with aluminum head, overhead camshaft, and Bosch mechanical fuel injection offered reasonable and economical performance. Spirited driving was possible with the column mounted 4 speed shift. An automatic clutch (electrically controlled/vacuum operated) was offered optionally as well as fitted leather luggage. The workmanship is remarkable. Every upholstered surface (coupé and cabriolet) is covered with heavy leather hide, including the interior of the glove box! Power steering, windows, A/C, automatic shift, were not available.| Table of contents |
